Frequently Asked Questions For Businesses
For Early-Career Talent
Fledgling Work is a paid early-career work platform that connects founder-led businesses and SMEs with capable young people aged 18+. We focus on part-time, project-based marketing and creative work, with all matches personally curated (not algorithm-led).
You pay upfront for a curated match
You submit a short brief outlining the help you need (we provide templates to make this easy)
If your brief isn’t quite clear enough, we’ll come back with a few questions by email or suggest a quick call to tighten it up before matching. For first-time users, a short call is often recommended.
We curate and introduce a minimum of three suitable early-career candidates (our fledglings)
You interview the matches and choose who you want to work with
You start with a clearly scoped, paid project
We handle the matching and payments, then step back once work is underway.
Paying upfront allows us to properly review your brief, personally curate suitable fledglings, and ensure all opportunities on the platform are genuine and paid.
What do I receive with each match? For each fledgling we introduce, you’ll receive: • A CV and/or portfolio (where relevant) • Examples of work from previous projects or studies • Context on availability, interests and strengths This gives you a clear picture before meeting them.
How many people will I be matched with? You’ll be introduced to a minimum of three fledglings per brief. We strongly recommend interviewing all three before deciding who to work with.
How should I structure the work? We always recommend starting with a project, rather than ongoing work. Most Fledgling Work projects are designed to run 4–6 weeks, typically involving 25–50 hours of work depending on scope. This usually works out at around 6–8 hours per week, allowing early-career talent to contribute meaningfully while balancing study, other work or personal commitments. Projects may run longer or involve additional weekly hours where appropriate. However, it’s important to remember that many early-career participants will have other commitments alongside their work. During university holidays and quieter periods, some participants may have greater availability, allowing projects to progress more quickly or expand in scope. Projects should always have a clearly defined scope and outcome, rather than ongoing open-ended work. Minimum project fee guidance: £300+
What if we want to keep working together after the project? Project work is agreed, scoped and paid for through Fledgling Work. If a project goes well and you choose to continue working together on an ongoing basis, for example on a regular hourly or salaried arrangement, that relationship is agreed directly between you and the individual and does not go through Fledgling Work. Any further project-based work or defined pieces of work should continue to be agreed and paid for through the platform.
What level of support will a fledgling need? Fledglings are early-career, so structure matters. You should expect to: • Brief them via an online meeting and follow up with clear written actions and expectations • Have regular check-ins (email or online) • Give feedback as the work progresses • Provide final feedback once the project is completed This isn’t about hand-holding, it’s about clarity.
All project payments go through Fledgling Work. • You pay the agreed project fee upfront • We hold the funds securely • Payment is released once the agreed work is completed This protects both you and the fledgling.
What kinds of projects can businesses post on Fledgling Work? Fledgling Work projects are clearly scoped pieces of work with defined outcomes. Most businesses begin with a small starter project and expand the work if the collaboration goes well. This allows both sides to work together and see how things go before committing to larger pieces of work. Typical projects fall into three areas: Marketing, Creative, Business & Research. Projects can vary in size and scope, but many collaborations start small and grow over time. Many collaborations begin with a small project and evolve into further project work or longer term freelance arrangements once both sides have worked together successfully.Starter Projects Most starter projects run for 4 to 6 weeks and typically involve around 6 to 8 hours of work per week. This usually equates to roughly 25 to 50 hours of work depending on scope. This structure allows early career talent to contribute meaningfully while balancing study, other work or personal commitments. Examples of starter projects include:
Marketing
Creative
Business and Research
Setting up 1 to 3 social media channels and creating a 3 to 4 week content plan
Designing 6 to 8 Canva templates for social media
Researching a target market and analysing 5 to 8 competitors
Researching 5 to 8 competitors and summarising their marketing approach
Creating 10 to 12 social media graphics
Identifying 50 to 100 potential sales prospects
Creating a newsletter template and preparing the first two editions
Designing a 10 to 15 slide presentation or pitch deck
Organising and structuring CRM contacts
Researching 10 to 15 content topics and developing a content calendar
Extended Projects Some projects involve more weekly hours or run over a longer period depending on the needs of the business and the availability of the individual. Examples include: • Designing and building a simple website of around 3 to 5 pages • Setting up email automation workflows for different customer segments • Producing and publishing content consistently over several weeks • Managing social media activity over a longer period • Starting small and expanding Many businesses begin with a smaller starter project and extend the work once both sides are comfortable working together. For example:
Phase
Description
Phase 1
Research or setup work such as competitor research or social media setup
Phase 2
Implementation such as creating and publishing content
Phase 3
Ongoing work such as continuing content production or marketing support
This phased approach allows businesses to test the collaboration before committing to larger projects.Minimum project fee The minimum recommended project fee is £300. If a project is extended or continues with the same individual, there is no minimum spend requirement provided the work remains part of the same collaboration. If a business wishes to start a new project with a new individual, this will require another match.Feedback Clear feedback should be provided at the end of each project or project phase. This helps ensure a positive experience for both businesses and early career participants and supports learning and improvement within the community.
Why is there a £300 minimum project fee? We set a minimum project value of £300 to make sure projects are worthwhile and fair for everyone involved. Our suggested project lengths and hours are guidelines only, based on typical short-term support (for example, a few hours a week over several weeks). They’re there to help you scope work sensibly, not to limit you. You’re free to set your own budget, scope and timeframe, including projects that run longer or pay more than the minimum. Candidates see the full details and choose whether they’re happy to take part, so projects only go ahead when both sides agree. If you want to reference pay expectations without saying minimum wage, add this:While we don’t set hourly rates, our guidance is informed by what’s generally considered reasonable pay for early-career, project-based work. Businesses remain responsible for ensuring their projects are compliant with any applicable employment or tax rules. That sentence is doing a LOT of legal heavy lifting for you.
What happens after the first project? That’s entirely up to you. Many employers choose to: • Extend the project • Start a second project • Work with the fledgling on an ongoing freelance basis • Eventually offer part-time or permanent work There is no obligation but any project work must go via the Fledgling Work platform and you will need to submit a new match and project scope.
Is Fledgling Work a recruitment agency? No. We don’t place permanent staff or run recruitment processes. We sit between employment and freelancing, focused on early-career, paid work.
Is this suitable for large or complex projects? Generally, no. Fledgling Work is best suited to: • Small, clearly scoped projects • Junior or early-career support • Marketing, creative or operational work
What if I’m not sure what I need yet? That’s very common. You don’t need a perfect brief, we’ll help you shape it before matching.
Is there a minimum commitment for the Fledgling Access bundle? No. • Access lasts up to 12 months from purchase • Matches can be used for simultaneous projects • Matches can be used for new or extended projects • There’s no obligation to use all matches • No auto-renewals • Matches don’t roll over after expiry
• £65 (including VAT) for one curated match • £230 (including VAT) for a bundle of six matches
How do I know if a match will be good? Fledgling Work was founded by Suze Cook, founder of Ruby Magpie, with over 20 years’ experience recruiting in marketing, digital, communications and sales. We work with talented early-career people who may not yet have the experience to step straight into a full-time role, but who are smart, motivated and keen to learn. You won’t receive a polished, agency-ready output – but you will work with someone committed, capable and eager to prove themselves.
How do you ensure the quality of the people you introduce? At this stage, all matches on Fledgling Work are personally reviewed and curated. We work with a growing number of universities as well as early career individuals who are building experience through internships, freelance work, personal projects or previous employment. When a business submits a brief, we review the project and identify early career talent whose skills, interests and experience are a good fit for the work being proposed. Businesses are introduced to a small shortlist, typically two to three people, and can decide whether they would like to move forward. Starting with a clearly scoped project allows both sides to test the collaboration before committing to larger pieces of work. Many businesses find that a successful starter project naturally leads to further project work or longer term freelance relationships.
What if a match doesn’t work out? We don’t offer refunds on the initial matching fee, but if things genuinely aren’t working, we’ll do our best to find an alternative match at no extra cost.
Are you a social enterprise? Not yet. Our ambition is to become one. We’re passionate about helping young people access meaningful paid work and believe that, with the right opportunity, early-career talent can grow into a serious asset very quickly.
Fledgling Work helps you access paid, real-world work with small businesses who need practical support. It’s designed to help you build experience, confidence and a portfolio through real projects.
You can join if you are: • Aged 18+ • An undergraduate or postgraduate • A recent graduate • Early-career or career-changing • University-educated or not What matters most is attitude, reliability and willingness to learn.
Do I have to pay to join? No. Fledglings never pay to join or be matched.
Yes, always. We don’t support unpaid roles, trials or experience-only work.
What kind of work is available? Typical work includes: • Content and copywriting • Social media setup, content planning, scheduling and short-term posting • Email marketing support • CRM and data support • Website updates and CMS help • Research, SEO and analytics • Website design, development and other creative assets • Presentation deck design or editing If you have other relevant skills, we’d love to hear about them so we can share them with employers.
How do projects usually work? Most projects: • Are part-time • Run for 2–6 weeks • Have a clear brief and deliverables • Pay a minimum of £300 They’re designed to fit alongside study or other commitments.
Once you’re accepted onto the platform: • We review your skills and interests • We match you to suitable briefs • If shortlisted, you’ll be introduced and interviewed Employers choose who they want to work with.
How do projects work for candidates? When a business is matched to your skills and availability, we’ll contact you with the full project details, including the scope of work, expected timeframe and total project fee. You’re always free to decide whether you’d like to go ahead. There’s no obligation to accept a project, and you can simply say no if it’s not the right fit. If you’re happy with the scope and fee, we’ll make the introduction and you’ll work directly with the business.
Am I employed by Fledgling Work or the business? No. All opportunities on fledgling are short-term, project-based work. You’re not employed by fledgling, and accepting a project doesn’t create an employment relationship.
How much do projects pay? Each project has a total fee, agreed upfront. Fees vary depending on the scope, length and type of work involved. You’ll always see the full project fee before deciding whether to take part.
Do I have to accept projects I'm matched to? No. Being matched simply means we think a project could be a good fit. It’s entirely your choice whether to go ahead.
• The employer pays the project fee to Fledgling Work • We hold it securely • Payment is released once the work is completed as agreed This protects you from non-payment.
Do you take a fee from my pay? Yes. A small percentage (10% per project) is deducted from project fees to cover admin, safeguarding and payment handling. You’ll always know this upfront.
What if something goes wrong? If there’s an issue with scope, communication or payment, you can contact us and we’ll help resolve it.
Can this lead to more work? Often, yes. Many fledglings go on to do repeat projects, build long-term freelance relationships or use the experience to secure jobs or placements.
What happens if an employer wants to keep working with me after a project? Projects introduced through Fledgling Work are agreed, scoped and paid for through the platform. This means your payment is agreed upfront and held securely until the agreed work is delivered. If a project goes well and an employer offers you ongoing work, for example on a regular hourly or salaried basis, that arrangement is agreed directly between you and the employer and does not go through Fledgling Work. Any further project-based work or defined pieces of work should continue to be agreed and paid for through the platform, so payment and scope are clear for both sides.
Do you offer any training? Not yet, but it’s something we plan to introduce in the future.
What information will I need to provide? You’ll be asked about your skills, interests, availability and any relevant experience or examples of work. Uploading a CV and/or portfolio is important. We’ll also provide guidance if you don’t yet have a CV.
How does payment and tax work? When you’re paid for project work through Fledgling Work, you’re paid as an independent individual, not as an employee. You do not need to set up a limited company to get started. Once the agreed work is completed and approved, you’ll submit an invoice for the project. Fledgling Work is operated by Ruby Magpie Ltd. For payment and invoicing purposes, candidates invoice Ruby Magpie (trading as Fledgling Work).
Do I need to be a limited company? No. Most people start as a sole trader, which is the simplest option. You can use a limited company if you already have one, but it’s not required and is usually unnecessary for early project work.
Do I need to register with HMRC straight away? Not necessarily. In the UK, there is a £1,000 trading allowance each tax year. If your total earnings from self-employed or freelance work are under £1,000, you usually don’t need to register or pay tax on it. If you earn more than £1,000, you’ll need to register as self-employed and complete a tax return. Registration is done online and is straightforward. You can find the official HMRC registration page here . If you’re registering specifically as a sole trader, this page explains the process clearly. Many people wait until they know they’re going to earn over the threshold before registering.
I have never invoiced a company before, how do I do it? You can use our template here .
A final word from us We don't promise magic. We promise sensible, supported first steps with early-career talent - and a clean handover once the match is made.
